BRIEF HISTORY
The Personal Prelature of the Holy Cross and Opus Dei (Latin for “Work of God”) is part of the hierarchical structure of the catholic Church.

Its purpose is to contribute to the Church’s evangelising mission, where priests and laity cooperate organically in spreading a deep awareness of the universal call to holiness and the sanctifying value of ordinary work.

Founded by Saint Josemaría Escrivá on 2nd October, 1928, it was established as a personal prelature by Pope John Paul II on 28th November, 1982. The Opus Dei Prelature consists of a prelate, his clergy and lay faithful (men and women), who by virtue of a divine vocation freely join the Prelature. The priests are drawn from the Prelature’s lay faithful. The laity remain under the jurisdiction of the diocesan Bishop in all matters that refer to the ordinary care of the faithful. Therefore they continue to belong to the local church or diocese where they live. For more information see http://www.opusdei.org/

*N.B.*: Personal prelatures are ecclesiastical jurisdictions provided for by the Second Vatican Council and the Code of Canon Law (canons 294-297) that are created to meet specific pastoral needs with greater flexibility. Every prelature has its own statutes approved by the Holy See.
